September is Recovery Month, and the Scottish Recovery Consortium will hold its annual Recovery Walk to make recovery visible in Scotland. In our latest blog, the organisation gives more insight into this special celebration.
For over 13 years, Scottish Recovery Consortium’s flagship event, Recovery Walk Scotland has been a powerful force in shifting how addiction and recovery are understood across the country. What began with 300 people crossing the Forth Road Bridge in 2012 has grown into Scotland’s largest national recovery event – with over 4,000 attending in Inverclyde in 2023.
Held every September during Recovery Month, the walk brings together people in recovery, families, communities, support organisations, and policymakers in a vibrant and visible show of unity.

Why It Matters
🟣 Visibility Breaks Stigma
The walk takes recovery out of the shadows and into the streets—showing that recovery is not rare, but real and happening in every community. Powerful banners, music, and messaging help normalise recovery and challenge harmful stereotypes.
🟡 Changing the Narrative
Participants carry messages like “We Do Recover” and “Addicted to Life”, shifting public perceptions from judgment to hope. These affirmations spark more compassionate conversations about addiction as a health issue—not a moral failing.
🌹 Remembering Lives Lost
The moving Roses Ceremony honours those who’ve died from drug and alcohol use. Roses are placed in the water to symbolise each life lost. This ritual humanises statistics, creates space for grief, and reinforces the urgency of action.
🤝 Building Community
From people in early recovery to long-term advocates, Recovery Walk Scotland connects individuals, Lived Experience Recovery Organisations (LEROs), third sector services, and even every prison in Scotland. It fosters a deep sense of belonging and shared purpose.
🏛️ Driving Policy and System Change
The walk aligns with Scotland’s National Mission on Drugs by:
- Centering lived experience
- Promoting a public health approach
- Encouraging earlier engagement with services
- Influencing policymakers to invest in recovery-friendly systems
More Than a Walk
Each year’s event includes:
- 🌹 The Roses Ceremony – remembrance and reflection
- 🚶 The Walk/Procession – visibility and celebration
- 🎉 The Recovery Festival – connection, creativity, and community
A Global Inspiration
Recovery Walk Scotland has inspired similar events across the UK and beyond. In 2025, it supported Germany’s first-ever recovery walk, with more planned in Leipzig and Munich.
A Movement That Matters
Recovery Walk Scotland is more than a march. It’s a statement:
Recovery is real. Recovery is possible. Recovery is worth celebrating.
Every step, every rose, and every voice helps build a more compassionate, supportive Scotland—for everyone.
This year’s Recovery Walk Scotland is travelling to Stirling on Saturday, 27th September 2025.

Tracey McFall, CEO of Scottish Recovery, says:
“Recovery Walk Scotland is a powerful reminder that recovery is not only possible—it’s happening every day in communities across Scotland. This event shines a light on the strength, resilience, and hope of people in recovery, and the vital role that connection and compassion play in healing. At SRC, we’re proud to lead this movement and champion the voices of lived experience to drive real change in policy, services, and society.”
