Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) and the Scottish Alcohol Research Network (SARN) invite researchers to submit their research proposals for the 2026 SHAAP/SARN Alcohol Occasionals webinar series.
We are interested to hear from researchers from any discipline who wish to share their research relating to alcohol. We welcome presentations from new and early career researchers and/or international researchers. Seminars take place online and offer researchers a great opportunity to showcase their work to a wide audience.
As the next Scottish Parliament election will take place in May 2026, the theme for this year’s Alcohol Occasionals will be “Future directions for alcohol research, policy, and practice – priorities for a new Scottish Government”. We therefore ask that those submitting an abstract reflect on how their research relates to this theme.
Proposal requirements:
- The proposal should be structured using the following headings: Background, Methods, Results, Conclusion
- Word limit: 300 words (excluding title)
- The proposal should demonstrate the relevance of the research to alcohol in Scotland
- Applicants should ensure all authors have approved the submission
- All proposals must include a completed conflict of interest form.
- Our Alcohol Occasionals draw a broad audience which includes third sector organisations, service providers, and members of the public. Talks should be accessible, and proposal and seminar language should reflect this as far as possible.
When will the seminars take place?
There will be four seminars in the series, all 12:45pm-2pm UK time. Please save the following dates:
- Monday 18th May 2026
- Monday 15th June 2026
- Monday 7th September 2026
- Monday 5th October 2026
Please submit your proposal and conflict of interest form to shaap@rcpe.ac.uk (please copy in j.mcgarry@rcpe.ac.uk). Please also provide an indication of whether the research you intend to present has been published, or if there are plans to publish the research in the future. Finally, please include your availability for the proposed seminar dates (please see above). With the presenter’s permission we will record and share each seminar recording, and we also write an event report to further disseminate research findings and discussion points from the seminar. Previous event reports can be found on SHAAP’s website.
The deadline for proposal submissions is Friday 13th February 2026.
Thank you for your interest and we look forward to reviewing your proposal.
