Who we are

SHAAP was set up in November 2006 by the Scottish Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties through their intercollegiate group on alcohol. The Scottish Intercollegiate Group on Alcohol (SIGA) had become increasingly concerned in recent years at the escalation in alcohol-related health damage in Scotland -- both in its acute effects seen in admissions to accident and emergency departments, and in more chronic conditions such as liver disease and brain damage. Following a scoping exercise commissioned by SIGA, which included interviews with a wide range of stakeholders in the alcohol field in Scotland, the need was identified to establish a new advocacy group which would provide a clear, strong, medical voice on alcohol problems in Scotland.

Funding

SHAAP has received start-up funding from the Scottish Government for three years. This funding covers core costs and an initial programme of work. SHAAP will be fundraising from other sources to continue its work in the future, and is currently looking at developing joint funding proposals with other organisations for specific projects to tackle alcohol-related harm in Scotland. SHAAP will not receive any funds from the alcohol industry.
