Brief Interventions

Brief Interventions Conference

In February 2008, SHAAP organised a conference on overcoming the barriers to delivering brief interventions in the Scottish Health Service.

Research indicates that alcohol screening and brief interventions delivered in primary and secondary health care settings are effective in reducing hazardous and harmful alcohol use. However, they are not routinely carried out. The purpose of the conference was to identify the obstacles to delivering brief interventions in primary care and other settings in Scotland and consider practical ways that they could be overcome.

As an outcome of the conference, SHAAP published a briefing paper giving an overview of what is considered as best practice for screening for alcohol problems and delivery of brief interventions, as well as outlining current policy and practice in Scotland.
