BMA report on the damaging impact of alcohol marketing

8 Sep 2009

The British Medical Association has released a report today which examines the powerful and damaging effect of alcohol marketing on young people in the UK. The report aims to identify effective ways of protecting young people from the influence of alcohol promotion and marketing, thereby redressing the excessively pro-alcohol social norms to which they are exposed.

Welcoming the findings and recommendations of the BMA report, Dr Bruce Ritson, Chair of SHAAP said:

“Although a legal substance, alcohol is a drug that has a huge negative impact on public health in the UK. It should a matter of concern to all of us that this health-damaging commodity is so heavily promoted and marketed in our society.

SHAAP welcomes the publication of the BMA report which clearly demonstrates that alcohol advertising and promotion influences drinking behaviour. We fully support the BMA’s recommendations for tighter regulation of the alcohol market.”
