Alcohol use driving health equalities in Scotland
15 May 2009
Alcohol kills more people living in the most deprived areas of Scotland than living in the most affluent. The increase in alcohol-related mortality is closely related to the increased affordability of alcohol in the UK. In 2007, alcohol was 69% more affordable than it was in 1980. Reversing the trend in affordability is one of the most effective means of reducing alcohol-related harm. Preventing the sale of cheap alcohol will benefit the health and well-being of Scotland's most deprived communities and will reduce health inequalities in Scotland.
